FHIR is becoming the central standard for the exchange of clinical data. This presentation provides a clear explanation of FHIR’s structure and benefits, offers examples of data and APIs, and contextualizes its significance within current developments such as DiGA, European interoperability, and the EHDS.
FHIR is increasingly becoming the common denominator for the exchange of clinical data. The presentation provides an accessible introduction to FHIR against the backdrop of older standards and proprietary interfaces, and demonstrates the problem FHIR solves in modern healthcare systems. It also highlights the growing practical significance of FHIR in the context of regulatory developments such as DiGA, European interoperability efforts, and the EHDS. Using concrete data and API examples, it becomes clear how FHIR is structured, how resources are modeled, and what role terminologies such as SNOMED CT and LOINC play in semantic interoperability.
